Slightly older now but it works very well. Good converters - clear software.
Colin
A first class interface and fairly easy to configure. I found it really logical to get working (with Cubase). Easy to set up some monitor cues and groups. Ideal for recording.
Mel
Great value for the price. I'd prefer to have all the jacks on the back to keep the racks neat and the manual to cover a little more in-depth for those of us who don't use it to mix ITB (in the box). Mine is connected to a Soundcraft LX7 mixer and the Pro 40 is strictly for I/O to/from the mixer. Without the LX7 warming up the tonal range, I found the Pro40 a little sterile. A personal preference.
matthew
Good pre-amps, good functionality. Let-downs are lack of gain on mic channels and NO XLR line out at the back
Vasileios
Absolutely pleased with this interface. No latency issues, the preamps are very clean and transparent and the overall performance is amazing, considering the price range. The customer support was also extremely helpful and quick when needed.

Awesome, never had any issues with it!

Great hardware. Software needs an update and can take time to get used to.

I have had the Safire Pro 40 for a few months now, I bought it alongside the Octopre MK2 and I couldn't be happier. I run an online drum kit recording business (sendmedrums.com) and I bought it to upgrade from my previous interface. What really appealed to me was the ability to double my channel count to 16 inputs with running the two together. This mixed with the legendary Focusrite name and the award winning preamps, it was an easy choice. It is so easy to use and the software that comes with it really helps sync it all together, the monitor routing within the software has also made my monitor mixes the best they have ever been. Can't wait to get some Focusrite ISA Preamps to take it the next level! Michael Keane - sendmedrums.com

The Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 was the obvious upgrade for myself when I needed to replace my old, old, faithful Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 i/o. It fulfilled all I/O my needs, from connecting via the ADAT interface of my O1V mixer for my hardware synths, to the availability of two balanced, phantom powered microphones, or instrument inputs on the front panel. This just enhanced the workflow in my control room. Having the six phantom powered inputs feed from my sound room just was the icing on the cake. With Mix control to one can save and recall mix scenes very quickly making the Pro 40 a dream to use. The front panel metering is ideal for quick level monitoring and the availability of two different headphones mixes makes for happy clients.

I can safely say that for the money, the saffire pro 40 is the best audio interface you can get. I have two of these, and use them in dual unit mode, and they work flawlessly. The build quality is superb, and the mic preamps are of such good quality, I can barely tell the difference between them and my focusrite isa one digital. I must admit, the mix control software that goes with it is a bit baffling at first, but focusrite have the best after sales service I've ever experienced so that would not be an issue. I'm pretty sure that at some point they will come down in price if they haven't already because of the new clarett range so don't hesitate. Buy!!!

Having used the Saffire Pro 40 for some time now, I can safely say that it is my best interface to date so far. My only gripe is that the development of driver updates are few and far between. I used to use an M-Audio fast track ultra before the Saffire and the only thing I miss from that interface are the external FX inserts. Other than that I am happy with my Saffire.
Tim
Great box! I use mine live for gigs and it's bomb proof and the 10 outs are very helpful. I also have an LS56 and Octopre Dynamic and all have great sound and very reliable
Luke
Honestly great, perfect pre amps for everything, and when I did have an issue (brought on by me), the customer service was great for putting it right
Richard
Rock solid, great sound... What more can I say. "If music be the food of love feed me focusrite" X
Gordon
The Saffire Pro40 I have is brilliant and I'd give it five stars, _but_ I bought mine just before the new release. Mine works fine. The new release does _NOT_ yet work with Linux. There are some very fundamental changes in the software and so far Focusrite have been shy of letting people know what the changes are.
Benny
Great piece of hardware especially when used with an additional A/D D/A converter. Lots of features, routing capabilities, etc....has never let me down. The software is a little convoluted but this is a small price to pay overall.
Terry
I upgrade somewhat my studio and bought the Safire pro 40 from good overall reviews and replaced my old MOTU 896. I have other products from focusrite which I love including penta platinum compressor and isa 2 duel preamp. Just find great quality for the price. I am collaborating between studios so will be good to see how my records stack up to colleagues with apogee equipment

Having owned my Saffire Pro 40 now for a few years, I feel like I can honestly comment on how solid this piece of kit has been for me. My second interface, a huge step up from an old M-Audio 1814 (great at the time). I only really thought that the main advantage I was getting from the Saffire was extra channels. What surprised me was how much better things sounded going through the pre's and convertors on the Focusrite. Other things I like include The noise floor is fairly low Fairly decent Headphones amps, and 2 of them 2 front xlr inputs, great for spontaneous writing sessions Expandability via ADAT Things that could concern: Whilst mine has been solid, another Pro 40 owner had issues with the headphone port (that said focus rite solved his problem quickly) MixControl can take some getting used to, and could potentially be a bit confusing for those starting out. This thing is sturdy too, whilst it's generally stayed at the studio, I've used it gigging to good avail. The only limitation of live is the general build of most firewire cables and how they connect to mac book pros (not Focusrite's fault). This review comes at interesting time, as I'm actually looking to get my next interface. The time has come to spend a bit more and get something on the next level up in terms of convertor quality. Will I shun the Saffire, definitely not! For it's price, this thing is top of the line compared to other units I've used in the same bracket.
Samuel
Great product. Great sound preamps and great service from Focusrite

30-year heritage of acclaimed mic pre design

Focusrite's unparalleled preamp legacy forms the foundation of this versatile interface, with eight award-winning Focusrite preamps. Focusrite came into being thirty years ago in 1985 when console design legend Rupert Neve was asked by Sir George Martin to develop new mic pres for the consoles at AIR studios. The resulting, sought-after sound has been the basis of Focusrite mic preamps ever since. Those used in our computer interface ranges are a special 2-stage design created specially for the purpose, combining low noise, high gain and exceptional headroom, allowing you to get the best out of any microphone.

Precision conversion in and outS

Our acclaimed mic pres are combined with the very latest in interfacing technology, including precision digital conversion based on exceptional circuit design and multi-layer boards, offering the lowest possible latency. JetPLL™ jitter-reduction technology helps to attain the goal of pristine audio quality, coupled with excellent routing flexibility and future-proof, rock-solid stability. Meanwhile, powerful Saffire MixControl DSP-based zero-latency mixing software allows the maximum monitoring flexibility.

All eight main inputs feature combo XLR/TRS connectors and sense which is in use automatically. Inputs 1 and 2 appear on the front panel and support mic, line and instrument operation, while the remaining six are on the rear panel and offer mic and line input functionality. In addition to the comprehensive monitoring options described below, there are eight TRS line outputs. In addition, ADAT I/O, stereo S/PDIF I/O and two virtual 'loopback' inputs for routing digital audio between software applications are provided. Every mic pre features phantom power, with the first two channels also featuring -9dB pads for additional headroom. Front panel five-step LED metering for each analogue input offers accurate viewing of levels.
